Studying All the Time for Graduate School

Time spent studying = ALL THE TIME
Thanks for the question/comment Christina.
I am spending a lot more time studying in graduate school than I ever did for my undergraduate courses. The difference, however, is that in undergrad I studied for exams or quizzes, or spent time doing homework. In graduate school I am spending my time, reading, researching, writing, reading…(did I mention reading?) and I might not even have an exam coming up! But it is completely unacceptable to arrive to class unprepared or uneducated on the material. When I have an exam, they are ten times harder than undergraduate exams. They tests have mostly essay questions.  It is difficult to be in the top of the class when everybody is exceptionally smart.
Sometimes I think that graduate school is easier in the sense that I spend less time in class and have less homework due every day. For example, I am only taking 14 credits and only have class 4 days a week, which is much less than undergrad! However the level of knowledge that is expected out of graduate students is MUCH higher than what is expected from undergraduate students; and for that reason, I am studying constantly. When I eat my lunch, I read a chapter of a school book; when I’m driving with my roommate, we quiz each other on lecture material; when I exercise on an elliptical or on a stationary bike, I read over my notes in front of me… these are the times that I study in addition to my normal study habits at my desk or in the library. It is never ending. However, with that said, it doesn’t always feel like studying. This is my life. Nutrition is my career. I am surrounded by it 24/7 and I engage myself in it.
